High Fiber Diet

What is fiber?

Fiber is a substance that can be found in some fruits, vegetables, and grains. Fiber passes through your body without being digested, but it does affect how you digest other foods, and can improve your bowel movement

Why would I need a high fiber diet?

Fiber can make bowel movements softer and help regulate them. You may need a high fiber diet if you have issues with constipation, hemorrhoids, and diarrhea. Fiber can also help prevent bowel accidents.

How much fiber do I need in my diet?

The average recommended amount of fiber in a person’s diet is 20-35 grams per day. To achieve this amount, make sure you are eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and grains that contain fiber. There are many products, like cereal, that can be found high in fiber. If you are having difficulty getting the needed amount of fiber in your diet, you can also try adding wheat bran to food, high in fiber granola bars, or even fiber supplement tablets.

Are there any negative side effects of a high fiber diet?

Once a large amount of fiber is added to your diet, you might start to feel or look bloated; you also may have gas or cramps. To avoid having these side effects when you start eating more fiber, you should gradually add a little to your diet at a time.
